South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa called on men to take greater responsibility for violence against women and announced enforcement measures in response to a recent wave of murders that has drawn public anger at authorities.

Ramaphosa acknowledged that insufficient protections exist for women. He directed police to review unsolved murders, attempted murders and serious sexual offences against women and children within 60 days. The police will also produce a funded plan to reduce the forensic backlog for such cases within the same timeframe.

The announcement comes as South Africa faces sustained public criticism over its handling of gender-based violence and recent killings of women.
