Marie-Celestin Karondwa, acting president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress party's federal executive committee in Butembo, was beaten to death on Sunday, according to a statement from the UDPS federation in the city.
The attack occurred after Karondwa appeared on a radio program to promote prevention measures for Ebola, the party said. Butembo is described as a new hotspot for the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The UDPS is the country's ruling party. No additional details about the attack, the attackers or the circumstances surrounding Karondwa's death were provided in the party's statement.
