Kenya confirmed its first Ebola death on Tuesday, according to the country's health minister. The patient was a citizen who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. Health officials identified 28 contacts of the deceased.
The death marks Kenya's entry into an outbreak that has been spreading rapidly through the northeast of the DRC since May. This represents the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC.
As of October 2, the DRC outbreak had killed 4,082 people out of 8,463 confirmed cases, according to health data. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. There is no vaccine or specific treatment currently available for this strain.
