The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity says cooperation with Saddam Haftar, deputy commander of the Libyan National Army, has become "impossible" after allegations linked him to drone attacks on fuel storage facilities and power stations in western Libya, according to The Guardian.

Saddam Haftar is the son of warlord Khalifa Haftar. The GNU alleges he oversaw a "terror cell" responsible for the attacks on critical infrastructure in the region.

The allegations have derailed a US-backed plan to unify Libya's security, judicial and political institutions. The United States had viewed Saddam Haftar as a key figure in those unification efforts.

The breakdown of cooperation represents a significant setback to the merger plan that the GNU and Haftar's forces had been pursuing together.
